CCAT practice questions at the real eighteen-second pace

The CCAT is 50 questions in 15 minutes covering verbal ability, math and logic, and spatial reasoning. Criteria reports a mean raw score of 24.2 with a standard deviation of 8.58, and says most candidates will not finish inside the time limit. There is no universal pass mark; employers set their own ranges.

Formally the Criteria Cognitive Aptitude Test (CCAT). Awarding body: Criteria Corp. Neuron Trainer is an independent study app and is not affiliated with, endorsed by or sponsored by the organization that owns this exam.

What a raw score means
In Criteria’s published sample CCAT score report, an overall score of 24 corresponds to a percentile rank of 50, described as scoring better than 50% of the people who have taken this test.Source: Criteria Corp, CCAT Information Brief, verified 7 August 2026A sample score report, so it illustrates the raw-score-to-percentile mapping rather than publishing a full norm table.
How employers use the score
Criteria supplies suggested score ranges for a long list of roles, based on samples of prior scores from people applying for or occupying similar roles. Employers can also build their own ranges from their own data.Source: Criteria Corp, verified 7 August 2026
Where you take it

Passing score
Not published by Criteria. There is no universal CCAT passing score. Criteria publishes suggested score ranges per role and lets employers define their own, so the benchmark you are measured against belongs to the company you applied to, not to the test.Checked against: Criteria Corp, verified 7 August 2026
Cost
Not published by Criteria. There is no candidate fee. Criteria licenses the CCAT to employers, who administer it as part of their own hiring process, so nothing is sold to the person taking it.Checked against: Criteria Corp, CCAT product page, verified 7 August 2026
How long it is valid
Not published by Criteria. The CCAT is not a certification and issues no credential, so nothing expires. Criteria publishes no validity period, and how long an employer treats a past result as current is that employer’s decision.Checked against: Criteria Corp, CCAT product page, verified 7 August 2026

Always verify: there is no universal CCAT passing score. Criteria supplies suggested score ranges per role and employers can set their own, so the benchmark you are measured against belongs to the company you applied to.

  1. Question 1 of 4

    EPHEMERAL most nearly means:
    Answer and explanation

    Correct answer: Transient

Ephemeral comes from the Greek 'ephemeros' — literally 'lasting a day' — and broadly means short-lived or fleeting in duration. Transient means lasting only a brief time before passing away, making it the closest synonym. Spiritual relates to the soul, religion, or non-material aspects of existence — no overlap with duration; the Greek 'ephemeros' and 'spiritual' share nothing. Trivial means of little importance or value — this describes significance, not lifespan; something ephemeral may be highly significant (a rare comet) while lasting briefly. Elaborate means detailed and intricately constructed — this describes structure and complexity, not duration. The core of ephemeral is always about time: brief existence, not importance or structure.

  2. Question 2 of 4

CARTOGRAPHER is to MAP as SCULPTOR is to:
    Answer and explanation

    Correct answer: Statue

The relationship is creator → finished product. A cartographer produces a map; a sculptor produces a statue. Canvas is a material used by painters — wrong domain and wrong role (material, not product). Marble is the raw material a sculptor shapes — it is the input, not the output; this is a classic analogy trap that substitutes the medium for the result. Gallery is where finished artwork is displayed — it is a destination, not a creation. To lock in analogy answers quickly on the CCAT, state the relationship as a sentence: 'A cartographer makes a ___.' Then apply the same sentence to the new pair: 'A sculptor makes a ___.' — statue is the only product.

  3. Question 3 of 4

A recipe calls for a ratio of 2 cups of flour to 3 cups of sugar. If you use 8 cups of flour, how many cups of sugar are needed?
    Answer and explanation

    Correct answer: 12

The correct answer is 12 cups of sugar. Set up the proportion: 2/3 = 8/x. Cross-multiply: 2x = 24, so x = 12. The flour increased by a factor of 4 (from 2 to 8), so sugar must also increase by 4 (from 3 to 12). 10 results from incorrectly adding 8+2 instead of scaling proportionally. 11 comes from miscalculating the cross-multiplication. 13 reflects an off-by-one arithmetic error. Ratio problems require maintaining the same multiplicative relationship between quantities.

  4. Question 4 of 4

    What letter comes next in the series: B, E, H, K, N, ?
    Answer and explanation

    Correct answer: Q

The correct answer is Q. This series skips 2 letters each time: B (skip C,D) E (skip F,G) H (skip I,J) K (skip L,M) N (skip O,P) Q. Each letter is positioned 3 letters after the previous one in the alphabet. O skips only one letter instead of two. P results from adding only 2 positions instead of 3. R would require skipping 3 letters. Letter series on the CCAT follow consistent skip patterns—count the positions between given letters to identify the rule.

What actually costs people marks on the CCAT

Pace, which is the actual variable

Fifty items in 15 minutes is 18 seconds each, and Criteria says most candidates will not finish. Given a mean of 24.2 out of 50, the realistic goal is not completion. It is squeezing three or four more correct answers out of the same quarter of an hour.

Spatial reasoning

Rotations, mirror images, cube folding and pattern matching. It is the section most candidates have never practiced, and unlike vocabulary it improves quickly with exposure because the transformations repeat. Worth knowing before you lean on us here: our spatial items describe the figure in words rather than drawing it, in the app as much as on this page, so they train the transformation vocabulary and not the visual task. Criteria publishes sample CCAT questions with the figures drawn, at www.criteriacorp.com/candidates/ccat-prep, and that is the right place for the visual work.

Analogy precision

Verbal is 217 questions in our bank and the analogies are built around a specific trap: substituting the material for the product. A sculptor works with marble but makes a statue. State the relationship as a sentence before you look at the options and the trap stops working.

Multi-step word problems

Math and logic carries 222 questions and the losses come from problems needing two operations: a ratio then a total, an average then a missing value. Under an 18-second clock the second step is where people abandon. Practice finishing them, not starting them.

How long to prepare: ten days, aimed at beating 24.2

Ten days is enough, because this is a pace problem rather than a knowledge problem. Criteria publishes the norm, so you have a target the other aptitude tests do not give you. Our bank holds 634 questions split 222 math and logic · 217 verbal · 195 spatial.

Days 1–2: untimed baseline

Run all three categories with no clock to find which one is slow. Speed problems and knowledge problems need different fixes and they look identical on a timed test.

Days 3–5: spatial

Rotations, cube nets and mirror images are the transformations almost nobody has practiced since school. Work them from Criteria’s own sample questions at www.criteriacorp.com/candidates/ccat-prep, which draw the figures. Ours describe the figure in words instead of showing it, so they teach you the vocabulary of the transformations but not the visual task itself.

Days 6–7: verbal

Analogies and antonyms. Build the habit of stating the relationship in words before reading the options. It is the single highest-yield technique on this section.

Days 8–9: math and logic at speed

Two-step problems at 18 seconds each. Getting comfortable abandoning a problem mid-way is part of the training.

Day 10: full 15-minute simulations

Run the whole 50-item set under time. Track attempted-and-correct against 24.2 rather than chasing a percentage.

Is the CCAT hard?

Criteria publishes the norm, which reframes the whole question: the mean raw score for its standardization sample is 24.2 out of 50, with a standard deviation of 8.58. Its own sample score report puts an overall score of 24 at a percentile rank of 50, so answering roughly half the items correctly already places you level with the average candidate. Criteria also states that most candidates will not complete every question in the 15-minute limit, which makes leaving items blank the normal outcome rather than a failure.

The pace is the binding constraint at roughly 18 seconds per item, and the items get harder as you go. Two-step word problems are where most of the losses happen, because abandoning halfway costs the same time as finishing and returns nothing.

The spatial section is the one with real headroom. Rotations, mirror images and cube nets are the only part most adults have not practiced since school, and unlike vocabulary they improve quickly because the transformations repeat. Of the 634 questions in our bank, 390 sit at difficulty 3 or 4.

How the CCAT differs from the exams beside it

The CCAT is one of the few aptitude tests whose publisher tells you the norm: mean 24.2, standard deviation 8.58, and a sample score report putting 24 at the 50th percentile. That single fact reframes the whole exercise, because it means matching the average candidate is a half-finished paper rather than a complete one. It is also the more forgiving twin of the Wonderlic: the same 50 items, but 15 minutes against the 12 Wonderlic publishes for its own test, and a heavier spatial component. Criteria adds one thing Wonderlic does not, which is that the CCAT is device-agnostic and can be sat on a phone. There is still no pass mark, because employers set role-specific ranges.

Questions people actually ask about the CCAT

How many questions is the CCAT and how long do I get?

50 questions in 15 minutes. Criteria states that most candidates will not complete every question in the time limit, so an unfinished test is the normal outcome rather than a failure.

What is a good CCAT score?

Criteria reports a mean raw score of 24.2 with a standard deviation of 8.58 for its standardization sample. Beating the mean puts you above the average candidate, but the benchmark that decides your application is the score range your employer has set for that role.

Is the CCAT hard?

Criteria publishes the norm, which reframes the question: the mean raw score is 24.2 out of 50, and its own sample score report puts an overall score of 24 at the 50th percentile. Answering roughly half correctly already matches the average candidate. The binding constraint is pace, at about 18 seconds an item.

Is there a passing score on the CCAT?

No universal one. Criteria supplies suggested score ranges for dozens of roles based on samples of people applying for or occupying similar jobs, and employers can build their own ranges from their own data.

What is on the CCAT?

Three areas: spatial reasoning, verbal ability, and math and logic. Criteria describes them as visualizing objects in physical space; reading, comprehension, logic and attention to detail; and reasoning with numbers plus analytical thinking.

CCAT or Wonderlic: what is the difference?

Both are 50 questions, but Criteria allows 15 minutes where Wonderlic publishes 12 for its own test, and the CCAT leans harder on spatial reasoning. Criteria publishes a mean score; Wonderlic’s candidate FAQ states there is no passing grade at all. Neither is a certification, and neither expects you to finish.

How should I prepare for the CCAT?

Practice at 18 seconds per question rather than studying content. The spatial section usually has the most headroom because most people have not attempted a rotation or a cube net since school, and it improves fastest with exposure.

Are these real CCAT questions?

No. These are original questions written to Criteria’s three published categories at the same pace and difficulty, each with a full explanation. There is no syllabus to memorize, so the format is the thing worth practicing.

The app

The CCAT app is still in development

The CCAT app ships 634 questions with full explanations, split 222 math and logic, 217 verbal and 195 spatial, and the fixed-length timed Exam Simulator runs the real 50-question, 15-minute format. Smart Quiz targets whichever of the three areas is slowest, and Topic Drill isolates one. Be careful with the spatial drill: our spatial items describe the figure in words instead of drawing it, so they build the transformation vocabulary and not the visual task. There is no calculator, matching Criteria’s candidate fast facts, which state that no calculators are allowed. An AI tutor will re-explain any item. The app is not on the App Store yet: it is in development, the roadmap page carries its place in the queue, and the released build will be free to start with a subscription for unlimited AI explanations and the whole bank.

  • Smart Quiz — keeps returning to the categories you keep missing
  • Topic Drill — one category at a time, on its own
  • Exam Simulator — a fixed-length timed paper (50 questions in 15 minutes, as this app sets it). It does not get harder as you go; the length and the mix are fixed.
  • AI tutor — re-explains any question in plain English
  • Progress tracking, reported per category
  • Study reminders
  • Light and dark themes

The app calls you ready at 60% on its own simulator. That is an in-app practice target we chose, not Criteria's passing standard.

Not on the App Store yet. This one is still in development, so there is nothing to download today. The practice questions above are the whole of what we can give you right now, and they are free and complete. See where it sits in the queue, or browse the apps that are live.
