HiSET practice questions, and the three scores you have to clear at once
The HiSET is five subtests: Language Arts Reading with 50 questions, Writing with 61, Mathematics with 55, Science with 60 and Social Studies with 60. Passing takes three things at once: at least 8 out of 20 on every subtest, at least 2 out of 6 on the essay, and 45 out of 100 across the whole battery.

What actually trips people up on the HiSET
Assuming five bare passes is enough
8 out of 20 on all five subtests sums to 40, and the battery minimum is 45. Candidates who aim only at the per-subtest floor can clear every subtest and still not hold the credential. The fix is to decide early which two subtests you will push well past the floor, because a surplus banked on your strongest subjects is what protects a bare pass on your weakest one at the end.
Forgetting the essay has its own floor
The Language Arts Writing essay must score at least 2 of 6 on its own. A strong multiple-choice score in the same subtest does not substitute for it, and the essay shares its 120 minutes with 60 multiple-choice items, so the budget has to be planned before test day rather than discovered on it.
Under-preparing for informational reading
ETS publishes the mix: Reading forms are 60 percent informational text and only 40 percent literary. Candidates who prepare on novels and poetry are preparing for the smaller half. Editorials, memoirs and essays are the material that carries the most marks.
Language Facility, not comma rules, dominates Writing
The published mix puts Language Facility at about 43 percent of the Writing multiple-choice items, ahead of Writing Conventions at 35 percent and Organization of Ideas at about 22 percent. Diction, concision and register carry more marks than punctuation trivia.
Limiting reactants and unit conversions in Science
Science items that look like chemistry recall are usually two-step quantitative problems. Working out which reactant runs out first is the step people skip, and Science allows 80 minutes for 60 items, so a stalled calculation is expensive.
How long to study for the HiSET: ten weeks, score-led
Ten weeks is the shape below, and it is score-led rather than subject-led, because the HiSET is a total as well as five hurdles. Adjust to your own starting scores; this is a sequence, not a schedule.
Weeks 1–2 · Map all five
Run a Smart Quiz in each of the five categories. Our HiSET bank is 3,218 questions, close to evenly split across the five subtests (633–650 each), so the first read is not distorted by one over-stocked area.
Weeks 3–5 · Build a surplus somewhere
Pick your two strongest subtests and push them well past the floor. Because the battery needs 45 of 100, headroom on two subtests is what protects a bare pass on a third.
Weeks 6–8 · Attack the weakest subtest
Topic Drill inside one category at a time. Mathematics has the shortest time per question of the five (55 items in 90 minutes), so drill it under a clock.
Weeks 9–10 · Writing under time
Writing is 120 minutes for 60 multiple-choice items plus an essay. Practice budgeting the split before test day rather than discovering it on the day.
Is the HiSET hard?
The HiSET’s real difficulty is arithmetic rather than academic. Three separate thresholds have to be met at once: 8 out of 20 on each of five subtests, 2 out of 6 on the essay, and 45 out of 100 across the battery, and the third one is the trap. Five bare passes at 8 produce a total of 40, which is short. So the exam quietly requires competence rather than survival on at least a couple of subtests, and candidates who plan around the per-subtest floor alone can be surprised at the end of a long process.
The content itself is broad rather than deep. Five subjects, the largest of them Writing at 61 items, and the tightest time pressure in Mathematics, where 55 items share 90 minutes. Our HiSET bank of 3,218 questions is weighted toward the harder end: 486 at our easiest level, 1,236 in the middle and 1,496 at the top two, which reflects where the marks are actually won. We do not publish a HiSET pass rate; ETS reports state-level statistics that do not translate into a useful number for one candidate.
How the HiSET differs from the exams beside it
The HiSET’s scoring is what makes it genuinely different from its neighbors, and it is the thing candidates most often misunderstand. There are three separate hurdles, not one: a per-subtest floor of 8 out of 20, an essay floor of 2 out of 6, and a battery total of 45 out of 100. Clearing all five subtests at exactly 8 gives you 40, below the battery threshold. So the HiSET quietly requires you to be better than the floor on something, which the flat 145-per-subject model GED Testing Service publishes at ged.com does not. The other structural difference is that Writing is a single 120-minute subtest carrying 60 multiple-choice items and an essay together, rather than the GED’s essay-inside-RLA arrangement.
Questions people actually ask about the HiSET
How many questions are on the HiSET?
Five subtests: Reading 50, Writing 61 (60 multiple-choice plus one essay), Mathematics 55, Science 60 and Social Studies 60. ETS publishes each count separately rather than as a single total.
What is a passing score on the HiSET?
Three things at once: at least 8 out of 20 on each subtest, at least 2 out of 6 on the essay, and a total of at least 45 out of 100 across all five subtests.
Is the HiSET hard?
The real difficulty is arithmetic rather than academic. Three thresholds have to be met at once, and the battery total is the trap: five bare passes at 8 out of 20 produce 40, which is short of the 45 required. The exam quietly asks for competence on a couple of subtests, not survival on all five.
Can you pass every HiSET subtest and still fail?
Yes. Scoring exactly 8 on all five gives a battery total of 40, which is below the 45 required. You need to be above the floor somewhere.
How long does the HiSET take?
Testing time is set per subtest: Reading 65 minutes, Writing 120, Mathematics 90, Science 80 and Social Studies 70. The subtests are sat separately. The Spanish form of Reading carries 80 minutes rather than 65.
What kind of reading is on the HiSET?
Mostly informational. ETS publishes the mix as 40 percent literary texts and 60 percent informational texts, drawn from narratives, memoirs, essays, editorials and poetry.
How much does the HiSET cost?
It depends on your state or jurisdiction, which sets the price. We do not quote a national figure because there isn’t one.
Are these real HiSET questions from the actual exam?
No. Reproducing live items would violate ETS’s test security rules. These are original questions written to the same blueprint, format and difficulty as the real HiSET, each with the explanation we ship inside the app.

The app
The HiSET app is still in development
The HiSET Test Prep app ships 3,218 questions across all five subtests: 650 reading, 646 writing, 633 mathematics, 642 science and 647 social studies, each with a written explanation. Smart Quiz targets your weak categories, Topic Drill works one subtest at a time, and the Exam Simulator runs a 100-question timed session. There is a calculator and an AI tutor for any question you want explained differently. The app isn’t on the App Store yet; it’s in development. When it ships it will be free to start, with a subscription for the full bank.
Smart Quiz — keeps returning to the categories you keep missing
Topic Drill — one category at a time, on its own
Exam Simulator — a fixed-length timed paper (100 questions in 150 minutes, as this app sets it). It does not get harder as you go; the length and the mix are fixed.
AI tutor — re-explains any question in plain English
Progress tracking, reported per category
On-screen calculator
