ASE A-Series practice test: free A1 to A9 questions and ASE-sourced facts

ASE A-Series is nine separate certification tests, A1 through A9, each passed on its own. They run 50 to 60 questions in 60 to 90 minutes, and 10 questions on every test are unscored. ASE publishes no fixed passing percentage. Holding A1 through A8, plus two years of documented experience, makes you a Master Automobile Technician.

Master Automobile Technician
Tests A1 through A8 are required for recognition as an ASE Master Automobile Technician. A9 is not required. Work experience requirement
All ASE certifications require documented, relevant work experience. Up to half of the experience requirement may be met by completing appropriate vocational training. Recertification tests
The recertification tests are shorter: the study guide lists 20 to 25 questions in 30 to 45 minutes against 50 to 60 questions in 60 to 90 minutes for the certification tests. The ASE Renewal App
For Automobile Series (A1-A9) tests only, the ASE Renewal App makes new questions available every 30 days for each eligible certification. A correct answer earns 1 credit; once you accumulate 8 credits for a certification, ASE extends that credential’s expiration date by 1 year.     Answer and explanation

    Correct answer: Machine the cylinder head to restore flatness

    Machining the cylinder head is correct because warpage exceeds specification by 0.002 inch, requiring material removal to restore the sealing surface to within tolerance. A thicker head gasket would alter compression ratio and valve timing, not restore true flatness. Additional sealant cannot compensate for surface irregularities of this magnitude and will lead to gasket failure. Higher torque specifications would damage threads and still not seal a warped surface. Standard practice is to measure total material removed and verify it does not exceed the service limit (typically 0.010-0.020 inch total from original height).

Excessive lining thickness would cause brake drag but not leakage. Incorrect return spring tension affects shoe retraction, not fluid containment. While contaminated fluid can damage seals over time, it does not directly cause visible dripping—the failed seal itself is the immediate cause of the leak.

    Correct answer: Worn shift fork or detent spring

    A worn shift fork or weak detent spring is the most common cause of a transmission jumping out of gear under load. The detent mechanism holds the shift rail in position; when the detent spring weakens or the shift fork wears, torque loads can force the gear out of engagement. A worn synchronizer blocking ring causes hard shifting or grinding during gear changes, not jump-out. Low fluid causes noise and hard shifting but rarely jump-out, as the mechanical engagement is unaffected. A damaged input bearing causes noise and vibration but doesn't directly affect gear retention. Inspect shift forks for wear grooves and test detent spring tension during overhaul.

    A vehicle's power steering pump makes a groaning noise during low-speed turns. The fluid level is correct and the fluid appears clean. Which of these is the MOST likely cause?
    Answer and explanation

    Correct answer: Air in the power steering system

    Air in the power steering system is the most likely cause of groaning noise during turns when fluid level is correct. Air trapped in the system creates cavitation and aeration, producing characteristic groaning or whining sounds especially during pump operation under load (turning). Worn pump bearings would create noise constantly, not just during turns. Low pump pressure would cause heavy steering feel but not necessarily groaning. A restricted pressure hose would cause increased pressure and potential whining at higher RPM, but the groaning during low-speed turns specifically points to air entrapment requiring system bleeding.

What actually trips people up on the ASE A-Series

Four outcomes are live on every one of these: A only, B only, both, neither. Candidates read statement A, agree with it, and stop. Read both statements independently, decide each one true or false on its own merits, then pick. Neither is a real answer and it is chosen far less often than it is correct.

Fuel trim direction is the whole question in A8

Positive long-term fuel trim means the computer is adding fuel, which means it thinks the mixture is lean, which usually means unmetered air. Negative means it is pulling fuel out. Get the direction backwards and every P0171 and P0172 scenario inverts.

MOST likely is not the same as possible

ASE stems are heavy with MOST, LEAST and EXCEPT, and the distractors are usually things that genuinely could cause the symptom, just not the likeliest given the stem’s clues. A groaning power steering pump with correct clean fluid is air, even though worn bearings also groan. The stem’s details are there to narrow it.

Measurement against specification means machine it or replace it

When a stem hands you a measured value and a service-manual limit, the answer is almost never to compensate with a thicker gasket or more torque. It is to restore the part to spec or replace it. This pattern repeats across A1, A4 and A5.

Ten questions on each test do not count

ASE seeds every certification test with 10 unscored research questions and does not tell you which. So a question that feels bizarre may simply be one being trialled. Answer everything and never leave a blank.

How long to study for an ASE test: four weeks, one test at a time

One test at a time, roughly four weeks each for a technician who already has the required experience. Master status is eight tests, so treat it as a year-long project rather than a season. Before anything: pick one test and download its study guide

The Official ASE Study Guide for your test lists the content areas and how many questions each one carries. A1 puts 18 of its 45 scored questions in General Engine Diagnosis alone. That is your study plan, published by ASE, for free.

Week 1: the task list, honestly

Work the task list line by line and mark every task you could not perform unsupervised today. Those marks are your weak areas. Everything else is review.

Week 2: drill the heaviest content area

Whichever section carries the most questions gets the most hours. Run Topic Drill on that category and let Smart Quiz find the gaps you did not mark honestly.

Week 3: the rest, plus Technician A/B practice

Cover the remaining content areas and deliberately practice the two-statement format until evaluating each statement separately is automatic rather than effortful.

Week 4: full simulations

Run the Exam Simulator at the length of your target test until your readiness score stops climbing, then book. Come back for the next test rather than trying to prepare for two at once.

Is the ASE A-Series hard?

The individual questions are fair. What makes ASE demanding is that it tests diagnosis rather than recall, and diagnosis is harder to fake. A knowledge exam asks what a thermostat does; ASE gives you an overheating engine, a pressure test that will not hold, white smoke, and asks what you would do next. That is why documented work experience is part of the credential and not an afterthought.

Nine tests also means nine sittings, and the honest read is that A6 Electrical and A8 Engine Performance are where most technicians spend the longest, because both live in electrical diagnosis and OBD-II data interpretation rather than in mechanical work. Our bank leans into that difficulty deliberately, with 792 of 1,302 questions at difficulty 3 or 4.

ASE publishes neither a pass rate nor a fixed passing percentage. We will not invent either, and the only sensible target is comfortable rather than borderline.

How the ASE A-Series differs from the exams beside it

Every other exam on this site is one test you either pass or do not. ASE A-Series is nine, and that single structural fact should reshape how you prepare. You do not study for the ASE. You study for A5, sit A5, and come back for A8 when you are ready. Two more things follow from it. First, there is no cumulative score, so a weak area cannot drag down a strong one. Second, Master status is a collection rather than an exam: A1 through A8, all current at the same time, which is why keeping them alive matters as much as earning them. ASE is also the only exam here that requires documented work experience on top of a passing score, and the only one that lets you extend a credential by answering questions in an app instead of re-sitting a test.

Questions people actually ask about the ASE A-Series

How many questions are on an ASE A-Series test?

It depends which one. A3 and A4 are 50 questions with 40 scored, in 60 minutes. A1, A2 and A5 are 55 with 45 scored, in 75 minutes. A6, A7, A8 and A9 are 60 with 50 scored, in 75 to 90 minutes.

What is the passing score for ASE tests?

ASE does not publish one. Its official documents describe test lengths, scoring process and unscored research questions, but no fixed percentage. If a site tells you it is exactly 70 percent, ask them where ASE says that.

Do I need work experience to get ASE certified?

Yes. ASE states that all its certifications require documented, relevant work experience, and the A-Series requires two years. Up to half of that can be met with appropriate vocational training. Passing the test alone does not make you certified.

What is an ASE Master Automobile Technician?

Someone holding current certification in A1 through A8. A9, Light Vehicle Diesel Engines, is not required. Because credentials expire, keeping Master status means keeping all eight current at once.

Do I have to take all nine tests?

No. Each of A1 through A9 is a standalone certification you can take on its own. Plenty of technicians hold two or three in the areas they actually work in. Take the ones your job and your bay rate justify.

What are the 10 questions that do not count?

Research questions. ASE seeds every certification test with 10 unscored items to gather statistics for future tests, and does not identify them. Answer every question, because guessing costs you nothing and skipping might.

How long does ASE certification last?

ASE confirms that credentials expire and must be renewed, but neither official candidate document states the term in years, so we publish none. You renew either by passing the shorter recertification test, 20 to 25 questions in 30 to 45 minutes, or, for A1 through A9, with eight ASE Renewal App credits, each extending the credential by a year.

Are these real questions from the actual ASE test?

No. That would violate exam security rules. These are original questions written to the same content areas, question formats and difficulty as the real tests, each with a full explanation of why the right answer is right and the distractors are not.
